3D Printing: Social and Cultural Trajectories
CCI researchers Angela Daly, Ramon Lobato and Julian Thomas of the Swinburne Institute for Social Research, aided by Darcy Allen, organised the symposium '3D Printing: Social and Cultural Trajectories' held at Swinburne University on 5 December. The event was the first of its kind in Australia (and possibly worldwide) that had a specific focus on the social, cultural and legal aspects of 3D printing. The symposium comprised presentations from humanities and social science academics, including CCI researcher Tama Leaver (Curtin University), a keynote from Matthew Rimmer, ARC Future Fellow and Associate Professor in Law at the ANU, on ‘Intellectual Property, 3D Printing, Remix Culture and the Maker Movement’, and CCI node leader Julian Thomas, who urged that 3D printing be looked at in the context of the history of plastics as well as the history of computers. The event was also covered by 3D Printing Industry, the leading news source for the 3D printing sector: http://3dprintingindustry.com/2013/12/11/review-3d-printing-social-cultural-trajectories-symposium/ and http://3dprintingindustry.com/2013/11/25/event-dedicated-social-cultural-trajectories-3d-printing/
